സമ്പത്ത് ധാരാളമുണ്ട്, ശരിയാണ്. പക്ഷേ സുന്ദറിന്റെ സ്വപ്നങ്ങളില്‍ സമ്പത്ത് മാത്രം നിറയുവാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയതില്‍പ്പിന്നെ ശ്രീജയും ഒരേയൊരു മകനായ മനുവും എന്നേ അയാളുടെ ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍നിന്ന് പുറത്തായിത്തീര്‍ന്നിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോള്‍ മനു പ്ലസ്ടുവില്‍. അവന്റെ സ്കൂളിലെ റാങ്ക് പ്രതീക്ഷ. പക്ഷേ അവന്റെ മിടുക്ക് പഠനത്തില്‍മാത്രം ഒതുങ്ങി. അവന്‍ എപ്പോഴും മൌനിയാണ്. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ത്തന്നെ അവനെ ഉല്ലാസവാനാക്കുന്ന അന്തരീക്ഷം ഈ കൊട്ടാരം പോലെയുള്ള വലിയ വീട്ടില്‍ ഇല്ലല്ലോയെന്ന് ശ്രീജ വേദനയോടെ ഓര്‍ത്തു. ആരോഗ്യകരമായ ഒരു കുടുംബാന്തരീക്ഷത്തിന്റെ അഭാവത്തില്‍ തളം കെട്ടിയ നിരാശയ്ക്കും നിശബ്ദതയ്ക്കുമിടയിലൂടെ അവന്‍ ഒരു ഏകാന്തജീവിയായി ജീവിച്ചു. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അവനെ പറയുന്നതെന്തിന്, ഇവിടെ എല്ലാവരും ഏകാന്തജീവികളാണ്. മുറിഞ്ഞുകിടക്കുന്ന ദ്വീപുകള്‍, ശ്രീജ ഓര്‍ത്തു.

സമയം കഴിഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നതല്ലാതെ സുന്ദറിനെ കാണുന്നില്ല. ഇന്നും പതിവ് ആവര്‍ത്തിക്കുകയാണെന്ന് കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ ശ്രീജ എഴുന്നേറ്റു. ദേഷ്യമല്ല, നിരാശയാണ്. പണ്ടൊക്കെ ദേഷ്യമായിരുന്നു. അന്ന് എന്നും പരാതികളും വഴക്കുകളുമായിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോള്‍ പരാതികളുമില്ല, പരിഭവങ്ങളുമില്ല. തണുത്ത നിരാശ മാത്രം.

മനുവിന്റെ മുറിയില്‍ വെട്ടം. അവന്‍ ഉറങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ടാവില്ല. വര്‍ഷാവസാന പരീക്ഷയ്ക്ക് പഠിക്കുകയാണ്. ശ്രീജ മനുവിന്റെ മുറിയിലേയ്ക്ക് നടന്നു.

ചാരിയിട്ടിരുന്ന വാതില്‍ തുറന്ന് അവള്‍ വാതില്‍പ്പടിയിലേയ്ക്ക് ചാരി മനുവിനെ നോക്കിനിന്നു. അവന്‍ പുസ്തകത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് മുഖം പൂഴ്ത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ശ്രീജയ്ക്ക് കാരണമറിയാത്ത വിഷമം തോന്നി.

വാതില്‍ക്കല്‍ ആരോ നില്‍ക്കുന്നതായി തോന്നിയ മനു തലയുയര്‍ത്തി നോക്കി. കുളിച്ച് ഫ്രഷായി, ചുവന്ന ഫാന്‍സിസാരിയും ബ്ലൌസുമണിഞ്ഞ് നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ശ്രീജയെ അവന്‍ കണ്ടു.

“അമ്മ എവിടേലും പോവാണോ?”

ആ ചോദ്യത്തിന്റെ നിഷ്കളങ്കതയില്‍ ശ്രീജയുടെ മിഴികള്‍ തൂവിപ്പോയി. അവള്‍ തുളുമ്പുന്ന മിഴികള്‍ താഴ്ത്തി മുഖം കുനിച്ച് തലകുലുക്കി നിഷേധിച്ചു, “ഊങ്ങ്ഹും..”

മനുവിന് ടെന്‍ഷനായി. അച്ഛന്‍ അമ്മയുമായി എവിടെയോ പോകാമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞിട്ട് പറ്റിച്ചുവെന്ന് അവന് മനസിലായി.

“അമ്മേ, ഇന്ന് മോഡലെക്സാമിന്റെ റിസള്‍ട്ട് വന്നു. എനിക്കാണ് ഫസ്റ്റ്”, അവളെ സന്തോഷിപ്പിക്കുവാനുള്ള ആത്മാര്‍ത്ഥമായ ആഗ്രഹത്തോടെ അവന്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു.

ശ്രീജ പെട്ടെന്ന് മുഖമുയര്‍ത്തി. അവളുടെ മുഖത്ത് ആശ്വാസം കലര്‍ന്നൊരു സന്തോഷമുണ്ടായി.

അവള്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് ഉള്ളിലേയ്ക്ക് കടന്ന് മനുവിനരികിലെത്തി കസേരയിലിരുന്ന അവനെ പുണര്‍ന്നു. ശ്രീജയുടെ മാറില്‍ മനുവിന്റെ മുഖം ചേര്‍ന്നു. മുന്‍പിലേയ്ക്ക് വീണ, അവളുടെ കറുത്തുതഴച്ച മുടിയിഴകള്‍ മനുവിന്റെ കവിളുകളില്‍ ഉരസി. ഷാമ്പൂവിന്റെ നേര്‍ത്ത മണമുള്ള, വിടര്‍ത്തിയിട്ട മുടിനൂലുകള്‍ കവിളിലും ചുണ്ടുകളിലും ഒട്ടിയപ്പോള്‍ മനുവിന്റെ കൈകള്‍ അവളുടെ ചൂടുള്ള പുറത്ത് ചുറ്റി. പുറം മറഞ്ഞുകിടന്നിരുന്ന മുടിനാരുകളില്‍ക്കൂടി അവന്റെ കൈവിരലുകള്‍ ഓടിനടന്നു.

ശ്രീജ പതിയെ നിവര്‍ന്നു. മനുവിന്റെ കൈകള്‍ അവളുടെ മുടിയില്‍ത്തന്നെ മൃദുവായി ചുറ്റിപ്പിടിച്ചിരുന്നു. അത് മനസിലാക്കിയ അവളുടെ മുഖത്തെ അത്ഭുതം കണ്ട് മനു പറഞ്ഞു, “അമ്മേടെ മുടിയെന്ത് ഭംഗിയാ, പട്ട് പോലെ..”

ശ്രീജ അത്ഭുതത്തോടെ അവന്റെ മുഖത്തേയ്ക്ക് നോക്കി. പിന്നെ പതിയെ അവന്റെ മുടിയില്‍ വിരലുകള്‍ കടത്തി വാത്സല്യത്തോടെ ഒന്നുലച്ചിട്ട് തന്റെ മുറിയിലേയ്ക്ക് നടന്നു.

മുറിയിലെത്തിയതും ശ്രീജ തേങ്ങിപ്പോയി. അവള്‍ക്ക് ഉപേക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടതുപോലെ തോന്നി. സുന്ദര്‍ എന്നോ തന്നെ മറന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു പെണ്ണിന് കഴിയാവുന്ന എല്ലാ സ്നേഹത്തോടെയും സ്നേഹിച്ചിട്ടും സുന്ദര്‍ തന്നെ മനസിലാക്കുന്നില്ലല്ലോയെന്ന് അവള്‍ ദു:ഖിച്ചു.

ഇത് തന്റെ വിധിയാണെന്ന് സമാധാനിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അവള്‍ വാര്‍ഡ് റോബിന് നേരെ നടന്നു. സാരിയും ബ്ലൌസും അഴിച്ച് ഭംഗിയായി മടക്കിവെച്ച് ഒരു സാദാ നൈറ്റി അവള്‍ പുറത്തെടുത്തു.

നൈറ്റിയുമായി ആള്‍ക്കണ്ണാടിയ്ക്ക് മുന്‍പില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അവള്‍ സ്വന്തം ശരീരത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് നോക്കി. മുപ്പത്തിയാറ് വയസ് കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. എങ്കിലും, അല്‍പ്പം ഇരുണ്ടതെങ്കിലും, ഇപ്പോഴും ഉടവ് തട്ടാത്ത ശരീരം. വയറ് അല്‍പ്പം തടിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്നതൊഴിച്ചാല്‍ ഇപ്പോഴും കടഞ്ഞെടുത്തതുപോലെ. അവള്‍ നെടുവീര്‍പ്പിട്ടു.

നൈറ്റിയുമണിഞ്ഞ് വനിതയുടെ പുതിയ പതിപ്പുമായി അവള്‍ കിടക്കയിലേയ്ക്ക് ചാഞ്ഞു.

സമയം കടന്നുപോയ്ക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. പന്ത്രണ്ടുമണിയായിട്ടും സുന്ദര്‍ എത്തിയിട്ടില്ലെന്ന് അവള്‍ കണ്ടു. മുറിയ്ക്ക് പുറത്തെത്തുമ്പോള്‍ മനുവിന്റെ മുറിയിലെ വെട്ടം അണഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല. അവന്‍ ഏകാഗ്രതയോടെ പഠിക്കുന്നു. അവന്റെ ഒറ്റയ്ക്കുള്ള ഇരിപ്പും അന്തരീക്ഷവും കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ വീണ്ടും അവളുടെ മനസില്‍ ദു:ഖരാശി പടര്‍ന്നു. അവള്‍ മനുവിന്റെ പുറകിലെത്തെ തോളുകളില്‍ക്കൂടി കൈകളിട്ട് അവനെ ചേര്‍ത്തുപിടിച്ചു.

പാതിരാത്രിയിലെ പെട്ടെന്നുള്ള ആ നീക്കത്തില്‍ മനു ഞെട്ടിപ്പോയിരുന്നു. അവന്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് അവളുടെ നേരെ തിരിഞ്ഞു. മുടിയിഴകള്‍ പാറി. ഇപ്പോഴും ഷാമ്പൂവിന്റെ മണം വിട്ടകന്നിട്ടില്ല. അവന്‍ ഞെട്ടല്‍ മറന്ന് ശ്വാസം ഉള്ളിലേയ്ക്കാവാഹിച്ചു. അത് ശ്രീജയുടെയും മണമായിരുന്നു.

ഉറക്കച്ചടവിലിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്ന മനു പെട്ടെന്ന് ഉണര്‍ന്നു. ശ്രീജയുടെ കൈവിരലുകള്‍ അവന്റെ മുടിയിഴകളില്‍ക്കൂടി പരതിനടന്നു. അതില്‍ ഉത്തേജിതനായെന്നോണം മനു തന്റെ മുഖത്തുരുമ്മി നെഞ്ചിലേയ്ക്ക് വീണുകിടന്നിരുന്ന അവളുടെ മുടി കൈയ്യിലെടുത്ത് തലോടുവാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. ശ്രീജയെ ആ പ്രവൃത്തി അമ്പരപ്പിച്ചു. അവന്‍ അത് ആസ്വദിക്കുന്നുമുണ്ടെന്ന് അവള്‍ കണ്ടു. കുറച്ചുനിമിഷങ്ങള്‍ തന്റെ മുടി താലോലിക്കുവാന്‍ അവനെ അനുവദിച്ചിട്ട് അവള്‍ നിവര്‍ന്നു.

“മതി മോനേ, ഇനി കിടക്ക്..” അവള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

മനു പുഞ്ചിരിച്ചു. പിന്നെ അവന്‍ ലൈറ്റണച്ച് കിടന്നു. ശോഭ വാതില്‍ചാരിയിട്ട് പുറത്തേയ്ക്ക് നടന്നു.

സുന്ദര്‍ വന്നപ്പോള്‍ ഒരുമണിയോളമായിരുന്നു. വന്നതും അയാള്‍ കിടക്കയിലേയ്ക്ക് ചാഞ്ഞു. ചാഞ്ഞതും ഉറക്കമായി.

ശോഭയ്ക്ക് ഉറക്കം വരുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. ഭര്‍ത്താവിന്റെ കൂര്‍ക്കം വലി കേട്ടുകൊണ്ട് അവള്‍ കണ്ണ് മിഴിച്ച് കിടന്നു. ആ കിടപ്പില്‍ ഓര്‍മ്മകളുടെ വേലിയേറ്റമായി. അവള്‍ പഴയ നാളുകള്‍ ഓര്‍ത്തു. ആ ഓര്‍മ്മയുടെ പ്രചോദനത്താല്‍ അവള്‍ സുന്ദറിനെ ചുറ്റിപ്പിടിച്ചു. സുന്ദര്‍ വളരെ നിസാരമായി, സ്വയമറിയാതെ ആ കൈകള്‍ പതുക്കെ തട്ടിമാറ്റി തിരിഞ്ഞുകിടന്നു. ശ്രീജ കൈ പിന്‍വലിച്ചു.

നിദ്രാവിഹീനമായ ഒരു രാത്രിക്ക് ശേഷം ശ്രീജ പുലര്‍ച്ചെ എഴുന്നേറ്റു. രാവിലത്തേയ്ക്കുള്ള ആഹാരം പാകം ചെയ്യുന്നതിനിടയില്‍ സുന്ദര്‍ ഡ്രസ് ചെയ്ത് വരുന്നത് അവള്‍ കണ്ടു. ഭര്‍ത്താവിനായി ഒരു കപ്പ് കാപ്പി തിളപ്പിച്ച് അവള്‍ നല്‍കിയപ്പോഴേയ്ക്കും അയാള്‍ ധൃതിയില്‍ പ്രാതല്‍ കഴിച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. കാപ്പിക്കപ്പുമായി അരികിലേയ്ക്ക് ചെന്ന അവളോട് “ഇന്ന് നേരത്തേ പോണം”, എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് പെട്ടെന്ന് അയാള്‍ പുറത്തേയ്ക്ക് നടന്നു.

കാപ്പിക്കപ്പും കയ്യില്പിടിച്ച് നിന്ന ശ്രീജയുടെ അരികിലേയ്ക്ക് മനു ഇറങ്ങിവന്നു. അവളുടെ കയ്യില്‍നിന്ന് കാപ്പിവാങ്ങിയ അവന്‍ പുഞ്ചിരിയോടെ പറഞ്ഞു, “താങ്ക്സ് അമ്മേ..”

മനുവിന്റെ പുഞ്ചിരിയില്‍ അവള്‍ ഭര്‍ത്താവ് നല്‍കിയ വിഷമം മറന്നു. അവള്‍ മനുവിനായി പ്രാതലൊരുക്കുവാന്‍ കിച്ചണിലേയ്ക്ക് മടങ്ങി.

പുട്ടും കടലക്കറിയുമായിരുന്നു പ്രാതല്‍. മനു വിശപ്പോടെ അത് കഴിക്കുന്നത് ശ്രീജ നോക്കിനിന്നു. തന്റെ ലോകം താനും മനുവും മാത്രമായി ചുരുങ്ങുകയാണെന്ന് അവള്‍ മനസിലാക്കി.

കൈകഴുകി വന്ന മനു ശ്രീജയുടെ സാരിത്തുമ്പില്‍ കൈതുടച്ചു. അത് അവന്റെയൊരു ശീലമായി മാറിയിരുന്നു.

കോളേജിലേയ്ക്ക് പുറപ്പെടുകയായിരുന്നു മനു. കൈതുടച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ അവന്‍ അവളുടെ നിറുകയിലേയ്ക്ക് ചുണ്ടടുപ്പിച്ച് മുടിയുടെ ഗന്ധം ആഞ്ഞൊന്ന് മുകര്‍ന്നു. “ബൈ അമ്മേ..”

ശ്രീജയ്ക്ക് അതൊരു പുതുമയായിരുന്നു. അവള്‍ക്കെന്തെങ്കിലും പ്രതികരിക്കുവാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നതിന് മുന്‍പുതന്നെ അവന്‍ വാതിലിനടുത്തേയ്ക്ക് നടന്നുകഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. മനു ഉല്ലാസത്തോടെ നടന്നകലുന്നത് സാകൂതം നോക്കിനിന്ന ശ്രീജ തന്റെ മകന് തന്നോടുള്ള ഇഷ്ടത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ഓര്‍ക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അവള്‍ ഒരിക്കല്‍ക്കൂടി സുന്ദറിന്റെ അവഗണനയെ മറന്നു.

“അടുത്ത തിങ്കളാഴ്ച പരീക്ഷ തുടങ്ങും.” അന്ന് വൈകിട്ട് ശ്രീജയുടെ അരികില്‍, അവളുടെ തോളിലേയ്ക്ക് തലചായ്ച്ച് മനു പറഞ്ഞു. അത് ഒരു ഓര്‍മ്മപ്പെടുത്തല്‍ കൂടിയായിരുന്നു ശ്രീജയ്ക്ക്. വരാനിരിക്കുന്നത് മനുവിന് ഉറക്കമില്ലാത്ത രാത്രികളാണെന്ന് പെട്ടെന്ന് അവള്‍ ഓര്‍ത്തു.

“പാവം കുട്ടി, അവന് താനേയുള്ളു.” ശ്രീജയില്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് വാത്സല്യം അലയടിച്ചു. “അവന് കൂട്ടായിരിക്കണം, പരീക്ഷകളുടെ ടെന്‍ഷനുകളിലെല്ലാം..”

രാത്രി ശ്രീജ മുറിയില്‍ ചെല്ലുന്ന സമയം മനു കണക്കിലെ ഒരു പ്രശ്നം സോള്‍വ് ചെയ്യാനാവാതെ വിഷമിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ശ്രീജ അവനോട് ചേര്‍ന്ന്, അവന്റെ കവിളുകളില്‍ കവിള്‍ ചേര്‍ത്ത് അവനെ പുണര്‍ന്നു. മനു അത് പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നതുപോലെ തോന്നു. അവന്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് അവളുടെ മുടിയില്‍ കുറെ വകഞ്ഞെടുത്ത് മുഖത്തേയ്ക്ക് ചേര്‍ത്തു. അതിന്റെ ഉരസലില്‍, അതിന്റെ മണത്തില്‍ അവന്‍ കണക്ക് മറന്നു. ശ്രീജ അവനോട് ചേര്‍ന്നിരുന്നു. തന്റെ മുടി മുഖത്തും ചുണ്ടുകളിലുമൊക്കെ ഉരസിക്കൊണ്ട് കണ്ണടച്ച് അവന്‍ ഇരിക്കുന്നത് അവള്‍ കണ്ടു. അവന്റെ ടെന്‍ഷന്‍ അയയുകയാണെന്നും അവളറിഞ്ഞു. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ അവനെ കുറെനേരം അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്യട്ടെയെന്ന് അവള്‍ വിചാരിച്ചു.

മുടിയില്‍ കളിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് കണ്ണടച്ച് പതിയെ മുഖം തിരിച്ച മനുവിന്റെ ചുണ്ടുകള്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് അവളുടെ മൃദുവായ കവിളില്‍ പതിഞ്ഞു. മനു ഞെട്ടി കണ്ണ് തുറന്നു. പെട്ടെന്ന് എന്ത് ചെയ്യണമെന്ന് അറിയാതെ അവന്‍ അമ്പരപ്പോടെ മുഖം പിന്‍വലിച്ചു.

ശ്രീജ പെട്ടെന്നുതന്നെ അവന്റെ മുഖം പിടിച്ചടുപ്പിച്ച് മാതൃനിര്‍വിശേഷമായ സ്നേഹത്തോടെ അവന്റെ കവിളില്‍ ചുണ്ടമര്‍ത്തി, “സാരമില്ലെടാ..”

ആ ഉമ്മയില്‍ മനുവിന് ജീവന്‍ തിരിച്ചുകിട്ടി. അമ്മയ്ക്ക് തിരിച്ചൊരു ഉമ്മ കൊടുത്ത ശേഷം റിഫ്രഷ് ആയതുപോലെ അവന്‍ കണക്കിലേയ്ക്ക് തിരിഞ്ഞു. ശ്രീജ അരികിലിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാവണം മനു കണക്കുകളെല്ലാം സാധാരണയിലും വേഗതയില്‍ ചെയ്തുതീര്‍ത്തു. അവസാനത്തെ കണക്കും ചെയ്തുതീര്‍ന്ന ശേഷം മനു തിരിഞ്ഞ് ശ്രീജയുടെ കവിളില്‍ ഒരു ഉമ്മ കൊടുത്തു.

“അമ്മ അടുത്തിരിക്കുമ്പോ ഒരു എനര്‍ജിയാ… ഇന്ന് നേരത്തെ കണക്കെല്ലാം തീര്‍ത്തു.”

ശ്രീജ അഭിമാനത്തോടെ പുഞ്ചിരിച്ചു. വാത്സല്യപൂര്‍വ്വം മനുവിന് ഉമ്മ മടക്കിനല്‍കിയിട്ട് അവള്‍ എഴുന്നേറ്റു.

പിറ്റേന്ന് രാത്രി മനുവിന്റെ മുറിയിലേയ്ക്ക് പോകുമ്പോള്‍ ശ്രീജയുടെ കയ്യില്‍ മനുവിനായി ഒരു സര്‍പ്രൈസ് ഗിഫ്റ്റ് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ലൂയിഫിലിപ്പെയുടെ ഒരു വിലയേറിയ ഷര്‍ട്ട്.

“ഇപ്പോ എന്തിനാമ്മേ ഇത്? എനിക്ക് ഷര്‍ട്ടൊക്കെ ഇഷ്ടമ്പോലുണ്ടല്ലോ..” മനു സന്തോഷം തിങ്ങിയ കണ്ണുകളോടെ പറഞ്ഞു.

ശ്രീജ ഒന്നും പറഞ്ഞില്ല. കൈയും കെട്ടി, തലയല്‍പ്പം വശത്തേയ്ക്ക് ചെരിച്ച് പുഞ്ചിരിച്ചു. ആ നില്‍പ്പ് കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് മനുവിന് ഒരു ആന്തലുണ്ടായി. അടക്കാനാവാത്ത സ്നേഹത്തോടെ അവന്‍ അമ്മയെ കെട്ടിപ്പിടിച്ച് ചുണ്ടുകളല്‍പ്പം വിടര്‍ത്തി കവിളിലമര്‍ത്തിചുംബിച്ചു. അവന്റെ ഉമിനീര് അവളുടെ കവിളില്‍ ഒരു മുദ്രപോലെ പതിഞ്ഞു. ശ്രീജ ആ ഉമ്മയില്‍ അമ്പരന്ന് പോയിരുന്നു. അവള്‍ തിടുക്കത്തില്‍ തന്റെ മുറിയിലേയ്ക്ക് നടന്നു.

കണ്ണാടിയില്‍ തന്റെ മുഖം ചുവന്നിരിക്കുന്നതായി അവള്‍ കണ്ടു.
