3 pm, I am looking at my laptop screen trying to get things done. The to-do list was just on my side, there were still a lot of things undone for the day. The ac was at its best, and the dead silence in the office made it more difficult to finish the list, I could see everyone glued to their chairs and screens.
My eyes slowly started shutting, my mind, not focused and after few sec… minutes…. I realized I have already slept, my eyes had closed. I open them fast, looking around if someone had caught me. I knew the culprit that had put me in this situation. Every time I had them for lunch, my post lunch sessions was at war, to keep my sleep enemy, taking my time away. The delicious andra style cuisine for lunch, which had put in such a state. I was struggling to keep sleep away, but then I realized it was just waste of time and it’s better to give in, so I surrendered. I literally dragged myself, not ready to encounter any conversation’s on the way and looked busy with myself. I glimpsed at other tables, I think they were in the same state, that I was in. I actually could see a few who had slept comfortably resting their heads on the table. I continued my journey to the sleeping pods ( this was a place in our office reserved for all those who worked late shifts and needed to catch some sleep.) it was not the best thing to do, while the rest of my team was still trying to clear those deadlines. Uh! I just didn’t care much and I really needed sleep.
The place was secluded from the rest of the busy office and was very dim lit. It didn’t have any vibrant colors, we had chosen a gray tone for the entire sleeping area so people could rest in peace. I stepped into the zone. There were a few pods which were occupied. I went to a pod which was at the end of the room and opened, the bed was beautifully made, and the cozy gray blanket, was ready to be used. I placed my phone in the charging station, I saw a few notifications, but I didn’t bother to check them. I had thanked myself for creating this space as all my team would benefit and take some rest from their hectic work life. I slept with a good note and a smile on my face I closed my pod and went away to sleep.
Few minutes had passed, and I had all most lost, sleep had just set in. Grrrrrr….. Grrrrr ….Someone phone started to ring, it was pretty loud and obvious to ignore, as I was close to the charging station. The sound was loud enough to distract my sleep. A little lazy to get up, I thought it would stop after a while and I could continue my sleep and thank god it did. I was ready to get back to sleep and the devil poked me again. Uh!.. I had to get up, and I hated it. I was annoyed and went ahead to stop the phone from ruining my sleep. As soon as I got up, a tall lady was already at the station putting the phone to sleep. I smiled looking at her, at last, someone had done what had to be done.
In a very soft tone, I said “thank you” and smiled at her as if she had saved me from getting killed by a shark.
“oh!, I had to, it was ruining my sleep, is it yours?” she asked.
“no, I thought it was yours!”
“nope looks expensive surely not mine”
“ haven’t seen you in the office, which department are you from” I was curious.
“ I am actually new here, from the accounts section, just got appointed last week”
“hope you’re liking your new place, and thanks for helping, need to catch some sleep take care !”
“me too, nice talking to you good night” and she smiled and got back to her pod.
I really didn’t want to drag the conversation further, and wanted to get back to sleep. As I got back to the pod. The cozy blanket made me smile, I slept again, and waited for the lost sleep to return.
I closed my eyes, waiting to slowly drift away to sleep, but it seemed to have gone away. The thought’s of the lady had gotten into me. She was a tall lady, in her late 20’s, a casual black, tank top and slim fit jeans. She had soft curly hair still her shoulders, beautiful eyes, and a pleasant smile. A bracelet in her left hand and leather boots to match the whole look.
I wondered, how I didn’t know about a new employee in my office. The thoughts slowly muted and I slowly drifted away to sleep.
Days passed by, I had become busy with work and travel, the company was looking in better shape with a lot of big clients and projects. Expanding business meant a lot of travel, meeting, hectic schedules and less time at the office. I was focused on building a strong reputation for the company and myself.
With the focus on all these, I had missed my review meeting, and that showed up on the sheets. The accounts had messed up with the taxes and other expenses had not been filed. So I asked someone from my accounts department, to come in immediately and sort out whatever was necessary. The taxes had to be filed the next day.
I was sitting in my cabin with a cup of tea and my table looked quite messy, receipts, bills, purchased orders, all messed up, my laptop was covered in a heap of papers. The rude’s designs were lay undone, I had to still finish the design’s for rude’s and then sort the accounts followed by the post lunch meeting’s. “ oh god, this is going to be a long day ahead,” I told myself. I called up right to cancel all my meeting for the day as the accounts was an important task at hand. As soon as I dropped the call, there was a knock at the door, “may I come in ?”.
I casually told a “yes” still trying to figure out the update quote that had been sent.
“hello, sir”, said a lady’s voice with some anxiety.
I looked up to see, the same lady I had met in the sleeping zone. I totally had forgotten about her and was expecting me. Rao to come from the accounts section. The lady’s face looked anxious, but she managed to smile.
“hello, please sit down “.
“sir I am so sorry, I didn’t know you were the boss and just assumed you were an employee here. I must have known, I am really sorry”.
“ it’s totally fine, I don’t believe in all this boss concept and it’s okay you can treat me just like other employees” though I said that my mind was still focused on the sheets and I just continued.
“ why have the accounts been so poorly managed, I have never faced such problems with accounts from me. Roa, he was always there to take care of it, but this time I see that there had been a lot of miss accounting, what is the problem?” I told a little annoyed
The lady felt uncomfortable with my straight question, her smile had vanished from the face, she was looking else were trying to recollect her words as to what she had to speak. I could feel some guilt on her face.
“is there a problem Anitha”? I asked again straight, I had seen her name in one on the invoices and recollected it.
She collected herself and spoke.
“sir, me. Roa is not keeping well and he will be unable to come today, and he has told me to take charge and do whatever necessary for us to file the taxes by tomorrow.”
“okay that’s acceptable, but why has there been so many errors, I do not understand. It was never this messy before.”
“the fault is mine sir, I am new to your organization and I didn’t know the norms and hence there has been error’s from my side, I will make sure it’s fixed by end of day and we should be ready to file in the taxes by tomorrow”.
“hmmm. I hope you know what you’re committing to, this still requires a lot of correction. Finishing this by end of day is going to be hard.”
She knew it too. The amount of work was way too much for her team to handle and finish it by end of day. That too without road’s help, we both knew how hard it would be.
“ okay let’s not waste time then, please let’s get started.”
“ sure sir “ she sprang up the chair and wanted to hurry out.
“Anitha, please arrange a table for me in the accounts section, you surely need a helping hand, I will work with your team, hope we can complete this by days end.”
As I got up to remove my suit, pulled up my sleeve’s to make myself comfortable to for the long day’s work. Anitha stood there looking at me with a smile.
“thank you, sir. This is really sweet of you to help us, I am sure we will finish up the work today.” she was excited.
The smile had returned and she looked more confident. Our eyes met and she was looking beautiful, she had soft skin, the curly hair made her look cute, you couldn’t miss noticing her long sexy legs covered with those rugged jeans. She turned back to get out, and her ass swayed to add to her beauty. I thought I was lucky enough to get that view. I think men cannot ignore a beautiful butt, she turned back and saw me checking her lowers. I looked away as if I never saw anything, but women know what you look at when they turn around. She just smiled and left the room. I hit myself for the stupid mistake and laughed at my own self.
I had moved into the accounts section, it was a cramped room, I was given the table that me. Roa, there were totally of 4 members in that room including me. We started to work and it was not an easy task at hand, I had done all of these by myself at the starting stages of my company, so I knew most of the job. Anil helped me with the brief and helped me familiarize with tally again. Raghu frequently intervened for my guidance, few people randomly came to the room and were shocked to see me sitting there and working, but I didn’t care much and got back to work.
The lunch was called into the table’s and we ate as we were doing the work. It was 3:00 pm, I knew everyone needed a break, they were scared to walk out while I was still working, so I told: “we will break for 15 min and get back to work later”. I could see a smile on the other two’s face while Anita thanked me with her eyes for understanding. I got out and started heading to the marketing meeting, that I had scheduled and was unable to attend. I spent some time there with the other members and got back to the accounts room, people had already gotten back to work and I continued without disturbing anybody.
It was 9:00 pm and we were almost done, everyone had worked way too hard to complete the accounts, the rest of office had left for the day. I had finished my part of the work, while anil and Anitha were cross-checking the numbers. I sat on my chair and was resting, the final revenue had come in, they printed the final statement and gave it to me for verifying. I went through the document while the rest three were anxiously waiting for my feedback.
“ okay, awesome guys! I think it’s correct, just send a copy to me. Rao for verification and also the ca and yay!! We have done it. Great job all three of you.”
They thanked me too for my support. I headed back to my cabin to pick up my suit and keys, as I go out of the room, I thought it would be nice to get out with the team, as we had all worked hard and deserved to party. Immediately I went back and saw that they were all packing up ready to leave.
“I think we have worked hard and its time to have some fun, treats on me,” I told excitedly
Anil and the other guy looked at each other, for answers. Anil spoke
“ Rahul, sorry but I have to go back home and it’s already late, and by the time I reach home its going 11 in this traffic.”
The other guy joined.
“Rahul, it’s already late and even I can’t come, my wife would be waiting for me.” “you Anitha,” I asked
“yes sir I would love to come, anil join us know please.” she pleaded,
Both the men were still not so comfortable with Anitha yet as she was a little new to the system. They discussed within them self’s and told it was not possible. We could do it in the weekend they proposed.
“okay, fine let’s do it in a weekend,” I told this heartedly and left.
I picked up my keys and headed back to the exit. While at the elevators I saw Anita was waiting for someone, she saw me, came close and spoke.
“ sir I know you really wanted to go out with the team, they have to travel far and you know the Bangalore traffic. If you don’t mind I can join you, I stay close by and get back home fast.”
“oh “ I was taken aback, I didn’t expect this for her.
“ okay, great! Let’s go, and thanks for understanding.”
We went to the front lobby and the watchman went to pick my car from the basement. We waited there until the car returned. We both were busy with our phones, as the phones weren’t attended the whole day.
“ where do you wish to go Anita?” I said after taking care of hundreds of messages unread.
“anything is fine sir?” she told not knowing where to give her attention to, phone or me?
“ a drink at brewsky is what I think is perfect now. Would you be okay with it ?”
“yes, sir! Perfect I love their terrace, and I can get back home quickly, I leave close by.”
Just then my car arrived and we drove to brewsky. It was a 40 min drive from our office.
A track from Anoushka Shankar played as soon as I started the car, and she wasn’t enjoying it as much, I asked her is she wanted to change, we changed it to the FM station and there were Bollywood numbers playing.
She was happy and relaxed herself to the chilled AC. The phone just didn’t leave her hands, she was busy texting for a while and finally ah! She exclaimed and kept her phone on the dashboard and apologized. All her friends and family had wished her on her birthday and she didn’t have the time to reply back to anyone.
“it’s your birthday today”? I screamed anxiously
She smiled and told ya ! With a little disappointment.
“oh my god, I am so sorry “ and I started to sing for her.
She blushed a little and thanked me.
Everyone’s birthday is celebrated in our office, it’s a custom and I was curious to know why it was not done today. I let my curiosity out and she explained, people were trying to come into my room and as soon as they saw you, they went back. I also told them, that she could not afford to waste time as the deadline was tomorrow, and the party would take a lot of time and distract the team. She accepted my invitation to come out because she didn’t want to spend the rest of the night alone at her apartment, she at least wanted to go out.
I was dumbstruck, I really didn’t know what to tell her. There was silence. I collected myself and spoke.
“ okay, happened is happened, let’s make it a better day from now, we still have 2 hours left for the day to end, trust me I will make it the best birthday you have celebrated.”
She refused, but I insisted. I made few calls to my friends I usually hang out with, spoke to kamal from brewsky. Told them to make the arrangements for the birthday. Secretly typed out few messages while I was waiting at the traffic signals, and did whatever was possible at that moment. She was quite amused, watching me do all these.
“I never knew bosses could be so sweet,” she told a bit hesitantly.
“ ha ha, I told you already I don’t believe in the boss concept, all of us work for one goal in the office, we are all employees and no one is above anyone, in fact if you have observed you are the only one in the office who calls me sir, everyone call’s me by my name”
She went back her memory lane and told: “ oh yes, I know, no one calls you sir, expect me”.
“ but it’s nice to call you sir, Rahul is too cute”.
“cute?” I was shocked
“ yes sir you’re like my age and I start calling you rahul, it feels like I am calling a friend. Not very professional, now it feels like you’re my boss”.
“okay Anitha, call me whatever you’re comfortable with”
Just then a lovely track started playing in the background and we both started singing.We were all out and screaming on top of our voices and dancing in the car, it was fun to have a girl with that energy. We continued to sing and the people at the signals looked and smiled at us having fun. She loved the attention, she was bubbly, crazy, fun and also a sweet person.
We had almost reached the place and I made a quick call to my friend to know if everything was set. We got down at the valet parking and headed towards the top floor. The lady greeted me as I was a regular there. Kamal from the other side gave me a thumbs up and showed me the way to the table. As soon as we stepped in all of my friends were ready with a big cake and started singing the birthday song to Anitha. She knew no one, and no one knew her, but still thanks to all my best buddies they are always there for me when I need them. Kamal and the staff also joined, and soon everyone’s head was tilting and the other tables got into the rhythm and started to stand up and sing. Anitha almost in tears, looking at the whole pub sing for her on her birthday, they blew some pop’s and I expected it to be the way it was.
Rashmi came in and hugged Anitha to console her and the rest of my team join for a hug. I got up on a chair and thanked everyone in the pub and gave a special thank you note for kamal, he has always been there and is the best manager to take care of all our needs, the crowd applauded for him and kamal felt shy and thanked me, I gave him a hug, he felt special and his face lit up with a beautiful smile. The gang had already settled and were waiting for me. I went in to join, Anitha got up gave me a hug and told: “thank you, sir”.
Someone heard the word “sir” and started to pull my leg. I introduced all of them, and she beautiful jelled in with the rest, we spoke, ate, drank, made fun of each other and Anitha loved my gang and had already become close to a few. I could see they had exchanged numbers to keep in touch. I enjoyed myself. We paid up and all headed back to the parking. The day still not over for us, and we all headed for a drive in the city it was 11:30 pm and the traffic had come down drastically. Anitha was comfortable with the rest and went in another car. We roamed about in the city and again at 12:00 we stopped on a flyover to cut a small cake for her. She cut the cake and gave it to me first and then the rest jumped onto the cake. It was cold out there and I gave my suit jacket for her to cover herself up. We spent some time talking and smoking there and then we planned out to head back home. Anitha sat back in my car and we were about to leave and suddenly Rashmi came back to her and gave a gift. A big box, even I didn’t know what it was. Anitha initially refused but gladly accepted it later.
“what a day! Oooh?” screamed Anitha as we started.
“glad you like it”.
“you have an awesome gang of friends Rahul.”
I smiled at her for calling me by my name.
“ ya actually Rahul is nice, sir is too formal” she blunted
Anitha was busy unpacking her gift as I started back to drop her off.
Rashmi had selected a beautiful blue dress for her when I secretly texted her. Rashmi always knew to impress people by gifting and this time it didn’t go wrong too. Anitha loved the dress and thanked me and texted Rashmi of how much she loved it. She was happy. I loved to see people happy around me, and I liked Anitha for what she was.
We had reached back to jp Nagar and Mr paul john’s whiskey had already set in, and I was feeling a little drunk. I was not in too much control of the car. I usually never went behind the wheel after drinking, but this time I had no choice.
Anitha slowly guided me to her apartment road, she was also a little tipsy and finding difficulty in finding roads.We got down in front of her apartment she handed over my suit and gave me a hug. She told me to stay as it was not safe for me to drive. I knew it wasn’t, but I was a bit hesitant on staying. She repetitively asked me to come up have a lime juice and head my way back after some time. I gave in, locked the car up and followed her to the apartment.
The watchman greeted her and smiled at me. I smiled back, Anitha stayed on the first floor. She had a small 1 bedroom flat but was beautifully kept, I could see she had a keen eye for aesthetics. She had lovely drapes for her window and a lot of vase’s, candles and artworks on her walls. She had a sofa in the center and no television but just a music player it was quite dim lit. She had a full fledged kitchen, I thought she regularly cooked. She told me to sit while she changed into come thing comfortably. I was looking at few of the photos displayed around the house. She had a beautiful family she had a brother and 1 sister. Looking at the photos I knew she was the 2nd daughter and brother was the elder. I spent some time checking the murals and the painting’s she had displayed. She definitely had a good aesthetic sense and wondering why she would get into accounting. The sound of the door broke my thoughts and Anitha came out of the room.
What are you looking at, she spoke as she headed towards the kitchen.
“nothing was just admiring your artistic sense,” I commented still locked to the walls.
“you like it”?
I love it, you have a great sense of aesthetics.
“thank’s” she handed me the lime juice.
“where’s your glass?”
“ I am not drinking, I like the buzz and I have nowhere to go” she laughed.
“ya, it’s a good buzz and it’s sad it I can not enjoy it much”.
“stay here then, you can get back early in the morning” she casually told.
“ya that would be nice, but are you sure?” I asked in a doubt.
“yes, but you have to crash on the couch, and leave early morning”.
“okay, I understand”.
“cool, so we can have another round then?” and she showed me a whiskey bottle.
“perfect”
She went ahead and started making a drink for both of us at the counter, while I rested comfortably on her sofa with a beautiful view of her ass in her tight gym wear.
” you like my ass, don’t you?” she asked.
“No, I mean I wasn’t checking you out” I tried to cover up, but I didn’t even how I got caught this time.
“I saw you already checking my ass out in your chamber, don’t lie” she giggled while she came back with the drink.
“Ya, it a tuff one to ignore” I gave up.
She smiled and sat on the other corner of the sofa. We spoke a lot office, family, friends and we didn’t realize that we were, way to drunk by then, and the was a connection and the magic happening. Our talks had slowed down and we were just looking at each other, our eyes were glued. She had played a soft music in the background and had just lit the candles on. She had started playing with her hair and smiling at me, her bracelet was dangling in her hands, and she was waiting for a move.
And did things happen between us,? Or the too much booze dosed us off to sleep.
Did I fuck the brains out of her, or was it the cuddly cute romance.
